Premier and Reserve Men Gerrard Long, Nathan and Jordan Thorpe and Curtis Cosh celebrated their Marist debut with some great pressure hitting as the men’s Premier side won the opening game of the season beating Otahuhu 3-2. The Reserves also made it three from three for the men’s squad, beating Otahuhu 7-1 and Magpies 7-0 to complete a very fine day for the club. A feature of the two Reserve games was the outstanding pitching from our three young guns Mackenzie Thorpe, Daniel Chapman and Kalin Felise who all pitched brilliantly. Young guns Nelson Kohlhase, Logan Esau and Noah Rudd were impressive as was Peter Van Kampen, who returns to the top grade after a few seasons away. A good start for Coach Matai with the team looking to take another step up with the next challenge against Roosters. Premier Women The injection of American imports Blaire Luna and Mandy Ogle proved to be just what Marist Softball club needed, as the Premier Women got past Mt Albert Ramblers 2-1 in their opening game at Warren Freer today. Two walks to veteran Tuhi Cooper were fatal for Mt Albert Ramblers, as Mandy Ogle blasted a stand up triple with 0 down, then forced an error at shortstop which allowed Cooper to steal to 3rd, then an overthrow from the Ramblers catcher gave Marist the 2-1 lead to finish the game. But it was Luna on the mound who was the star, holding the Mt Albert hitters to just one unearned run. The team will take on club national runners up Western Magpies next weekend, and Howick, who had a good win over Waitakere Bears. |
