The first weekend of Junior grade play saw a solid start for the Girls teams. Marist Under 15 Red won both their games, 19-12 against Howick and 17-2 against Eden Roskill. In the Howick game, they started well but totally let the game slip, before closing out well in the last innings. By playing positively, they put themselves in the position to take the game instead of settling for a draw. It was a very pleasing start for Ula in her first game and Mary-Jane in her first game returning to Marist. Elise and Phoenix finished on 3 runs each and Starinah, Antonia, Ula, Mary-Jane, Nive and Josephine scored doubles. The Eden Roskill game saw a much better all round performance, with pitchers Elise and Nive really coming into their own. Sarah-Nancy played her first game returning to Marist, and looked perfectly at home. Elise and Francesca scored 3 runs each and Ula, Phoenix, Mary-Jane, Nive and Josephine scored doubles. The Marist U15 Blue had a powerful start to the season, taking the win 13-0 over Howick. Strong batting from the girls saw the first two home runs for the season going to Brooke and Alexus. The girls were strong around the diamond with their practice coming into play. Great base running saw Sapphire steal four bases in her first game. A strong and determined pitching effort from Brooke with 8 strike outs, Roze also had the opportunity to pitch showing her strength striking out 2 players. A top team effort for game one. Player of the Day went to Alexus and Play of the Day went to Roze. Tuhi Cooper’s Under 17 team barely fielded a team with 9 players, taking Ramblers to 4-all until the 6th innings. Cooper’s 17s then came back and finished Ramblers off, with Hayley Carter being Player of the Day. In the second game, the 17 Girls went up against a strong Howick team, and with 2 down last turn at bat, Tatiana Rouru took to Howick with an inside the park home run to tie the game up after time ran out. Player of the Day was Alex Solomon having an excellent day. The 19s had a great start on Friday night winning 10-3 against the Western Magpies. They didn’t have it all their way at the beginning of the game though, when a few errors in the first few innings allowed Magpies to get on top. After settling in, the 19 Girls came back with some strong hitting to finish the Magpies off. Georgia Dean was named Player of the Day for a consistent all round performance. It was Saturday afternoon’s game which was the feature match at Simson Reserve with the Premier Women up against Western Magpies. It was the pitching duo of Magpies pitcher Jennifer Ferret up against Marist’s Blaire Luna who dominated the game until the 8th inning tie breaker. With Georgia Rudd placed at second base, Tanika-Jazz Bell moved the runner to 3rd base, before Magpies decided to walk catcher Mandy Ogle. This proved a fatal mistake with Tuhi Cooper in the box slamming a changeup off Ferret to 3rd baseman Carina Hale, who fumbled to allow Marist the only run of the game; final score 1-0 to Marist.
